The purpose of this preliminary discussion is to provide readers with an overview of the book’s objectives and content in everyday language. In doing so, we are pursuing three goals: Firstly, we are providing access to social science theory relatable to everyday experience; secondly, we are outlining what will be discussed in the rest of the book; and thirdly, we touch upon the main features of theories that will be addressed in more detail later in the book and which will be referred to repeatedly throughout.
