FTOn: A New Ontology for Sustainable and Resilient Freight Transport

Well-structured information is essential for effective decision-making. Organising information in a logical way reduces ambiguity, facilitates analysis and enables identification of risks. A knowledge base, where this information is organised and stored in a structured way, is therefore necessary. To achieve this, it is essential to develop a knowledge management tool. Ontology is the most appropriate tool for meeting these challenges. In the field of freight transport, ontology plays a crucial role by providing a standardised representation of knowledge. In this context, we are proposing a freight transport ontology called FTOn (Freight Transport Ontology) that provides a simplified representation of freight transport by schematising knowledge into concepts and relationships between them. It provides a clear, scalable structure for modelling sustainability and resilience. The aim of this ontology is to facilitate understanding and information sharing. We adopt a middle-out approach to capture the complexity and diversity of concepts and build an ontology that balances generality and specificity. The ontology has been implemented using Protégé and validated using SPARQL query. The originality of FTOn lies in its ability to structure and harmonise information relating to the FT sector, which is overly complex, enabling interoperability, knowledge management and adaptation to the requirements of sustainability and resilience. FTOn is designed to be extensible. It can be adapted to other contexts by modifying or adding specific concepts, without altering its basic structure.
