Urban Heat Islands (UHIs) refer to the phenomenon where cities become significantly hotter than their rural surroundings, posing one of the most pressing concerns in urban climate studies and effective urban management (Oke, T.R., Urban climates. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, United Kingdom, 2017). This chapter explores the concept of improved planning and urban management for UHI mitigation by integrating Internet of Things (IoT) technology, specifically real-time monitoring through bespoke Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) based heat sensors. We present the development and deployment of three UHI sensor designs through ongoing deployments in London, with 43 devices currently collecting data throughout the city, and the ultimate aim of establishing a citizen science-based microclimate network in London. Case studies are documented with the Greater London Authority (GLA) and the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC), providing preliminary results which suggest the feasibility of using low-cost networked devices to sense and communicate Urban Heat Islands.
