In this chapter, we describe the experimental setup that was used for this work. It provides several different measurement options and a high degree of flexibility, to characterize various aspects of the device. We investigate six different laser diodes, including four different waveguide structures. With this diverse range of devices, we can study and compare three fundamental types of behavior, which are fundamental lateral mode operation, lateral multi-mode operation, and filamentation.
