Calculation of the Carbon Footprint of the Universidad de las Fuerzas Armadas ESPE with the Support of IoT Devices
摘要
According to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the deterioration of climatic conditions is advancing by leaps and bounds, since greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are increasing every day. Ecuador emits 1.9 tons of \({CO}_{2}\) per inhabitant, representing 0.1% of global emissions. Therefore, there is a need to quantify the carbon footprint of the Universidad de las Fuerzas Armadas ESPE Matriz - Sangolquí, where the gases produced by its IoT devices are analyzed, since so far only 2 universities in Ecuador made this calculation, and none included the effect of IoT devices. Therefore, the results obtained by applying the GHG protocol on the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions in the institution were: 38.2% for the use of agricultural machinery for direct Scope 1 emissions and 97.2% for electricity consumption for indirect Scope 2 emissions. In addition, for the analysis of the IoT flowmeters, the volume of the water pump was obtained to determine the expenditure produced by this instrument, the result of which was 1564 kg \(C{O}_{2}\) . Based on this information, the carbon footprint of the university was calculated concerning the emissions of these gases in Ecuador, obtaining a result of 785,241.57 kg CO2, which means that about 35,700 trees need to be planted to mitigate these greenhouse gas emissions obtained in this study. The work highlights the relevance of integrating smart science tools for emissions monitoring and analysis, establishing an innovative approach that allows for identifying more accurate and effective mitigation opportunities. These results provide a basis for implementing sustainability strategies in academic institutions, with practical implications for reducing the environmental footprint at the national level.
