This book is the result of 7 years of research beginning with the author’s working at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission and continued at the International Demographic Inequality Lab (IDIL). The research project had the objective to develop a comprehensive understanding of how to measure the degree of marital sorting with the aim of identifying patterns in inequality. Marital sorting is the phenomenon that shapes marriage patterns besides another factor determining what couple formations are possible at all in a given population of marriageable individuals.
