In this chapter I present an account of loss of hope as the fracturing of a sense of future possibilities in experience. I discuss such fracturing and even loss of future temporality in terms of Matthew Ratcliffe’s concept of “existential feelings” as constitutive of experience, and after him propose that hope can also be understood as the opening of a political possibility space in experience. Political poverty also means the closing down of a perceived field of possibilities for future political change. This kind of hope is engendered through participation in the rhythms of social life. Temporality forms an aspect of intentional experience, a way of inhabiting a situation in society in a way that allows for a meaningful sense of time flowing from past to the present. After Pierre Bourdieu I call this kind of lived temporality “human time” as separated from time as a measurable aspect of physical reality. I discuss the world of work and employment as providing an important avenue for experiencing human time in contemporary societies, allowing for the emergence of political subjectivity. Loss of employment and precarious work have effects on the lived sense of temporality which curtail the ability to experience political freedom as projecting toward possible better futures.
