This chapter introduces the human-centered design approach and the importance of understanding the patient experience. This chapter will delve into the role of discovery research to serve as a foundation for decision-making and design, ensuring that new products meet the needs and expectations of those who will use them. It outlines the early-stage process and key methods to inform drug and delivery device development, from applied ethnography to drafting concept visions, and provides real-world anecdotes and examples throughout to demonstrate practices and learnings. Lastly, the authors provide tips and tricks for success: succinct guidelines and common pitfalls learned over the authors’ collective 40+ years in the field.
