On Selected Visualizations of Scythian Nomadic Horse Riders in Exhibitions and Associated Catalogues
摘要
Scythian nomadic horse riders of the first millennium BC are represented not only for their specific form of life and economy but also by a remarkable art, the so-called Scythian-Siberian animal style. Their domain, the Eurasian steppe belt, is characterized by a variety of climatic conditions and landscapes. For decades, the public and scientific interest in the archaeological stories of these groups from the Iron Age remains unchanged. The artefacts are regularly at the centre of exhibitions in many different countries worldwide. This contribution is about diversity within Scythian societies in the Eurasian steppe belt. Focusing on various modern visualizations, I would like to analyse the common images and key players with the help of case studies of the last fifteen years which are part of the spread of media information, used in scientific publications and on display at various museum exhibitions in different countries. Who is always on display (e.g. elite burials and their gold, horse riding warriors)? Who is missing? Can we detect stereotypes (e.g. nomadic lifestyle)?
