Emphasizing the Relationship Between Transformational Leadership and Organizational Sustainability Through Sustainable Leadership: A Conceptual Framework
摘要
This study aims to identify the relationship between transformational leadership style and organizational sustainability by introducing a new perspective, which is sustainable transformational leadership style, through a broad literature review to investigate how sustainable transformational leadership (TL) positively affects organizational (social, economic, and environmental) sustainability. This study examines the proposed hypothesis theoretically by building a comprehensive theoretical framework, reviewing different conceptual models, and evaluating the relationship among the variables under study. The results of the present paper show the positive influences of sustainable transformational leadership style on sustainable organizational performance in its three main pillars. For an organization to perform and apply sustainability, it needs sustainable leaders with a visionary mindset to lead the processes of change to sustainability. Those leaders could transfer the knowledge of sustainability throughout the whole organization, and this is the first step to performing sustainably. For implications, the authors will expand further research by implementing the new concept of leadership which is sustainable transformational leadership in different companies and industries as the mechanisms of implementation will be different according to the field (industry, services providing, manufacturing, or others). Hence, the authors found that it is a necessity to build a solid theoretical framework for the new concept (sustainable transformational leadership) that was derived from all relationships that were mentioned previously; this will then provide an opportunity for future researchers to go further with more implications. The main contribution is to provide a new concept that is completely different from the traditional styles of leadership, which is sustainable transformational leadership. This study aims to build a solid theoretical and conceptual framework for sustainable transformational leadership that organizations need to achieve sustainability in their performance at various levels. It emphasizes the main role of sustainable transformational leadership in leading the new organizational culture, which is indicated by sustainable organizational performance. Consequently, the new cultural change will be reflected in a sustainable employee’s attitudes and behavior. In addition, sustainable organizational performance with a triple bottom line is considered the new paradigm shift in the business world that needs successful implications for new leadership styles.
