Focal Box 6: Language. December Revolution: Many Words, Many Worlds
摘要
Language played a pivotal role in shaping the collective identity of the December Revolution in Sudan, mobilising various social groups and articulating their political demands. As the revolution unfolded, language was not merely a communication tool but also a mechanism for driving social and political transformation. In this way, it acted as a bridge between the protesters’ political demands and broader societal restructuring, marking a clear distinction between the desire for civilian governance or madaniya (مدنية) and the longstanding military rule in Sudan. As the revolution evolved, the meanings and uses of words shifted to reflect the changing dynamics of the movement. Language became a contested space in which political actors sought to influence how key terms were understood by the public. Ultimately, it served not only as a tool for expressing political demands but also as a means of reshaping the very identity of the Sudanese nation.
