This chapter briefly considers research on the characteristics or perceptions of police regarding computer crimes. While much of this book is dedicated to exploring organizational, cultural, or structural level considerations, it is worth taking a moment to consider a simple fact—officers can vary significantly in their experiences with, preferences for, training in, and skill with computers and computer crime investigations. This chapter explores variations found among investigators in terms of their prior experiences with, enthusiasm for, and skill or knowledge regarding computer technologies. For the purposes of this study, these three dimensions—experience, enthusiasm, and skill—comprise what this study terms the computer orientation of investigators, a term which describes their attitude toward and aptitude with computer technologies.
