Over his long career, Jürgen Habermas has worked to bridge philosophy and politics, translating his academic insights into his role as Germany’s leading public intellectual. This chapter examines his recent contributions on the wars in Ukraine and Gaza to explore how the increasing digitalization of public discourse has affected both his position in the public sphere as well as the conditions for the existence of the public intellectual more generally. My central thesis is that it is unlikely anyone in the future will be able to shape public discourse as powerfully through the written word in mainstream media as Habermas has throughout his long career. I conclude by reflecting on what Habermas’s work as a public intellectual still teaches us about the relationship between theory and practice in today’s changing media landscape.

摘要
