Over the past 20 years, popular protest has become the most productive topic for historians working on most parts of late medieval Europe. Despite this growing interest, work on popular protest in late medieval Scotland has largely been confined to a few pages of comments in textbooks. This chapter reviews the historiography of medieval revolts and late medieval Scotland which introduce this book’s broader arguments. It argues that the Scottish evidence can be integrated into the wider historiography of revolt across late medieval Europe.
