The emerging field of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in thisIndustrial Revolution (IR) 4.0 is irrefutable. To cater to the global demands of the STEM workforce, the English language plays an essential role in encouraging STEM graduates’ global competitiveness and career opportunities. However, the number of STEM students in higher education has been declining, which is a worrying factor for the nation. As a result, this paper aims to discuss the issues surrounding the decrease in STEM students in higher education in Malaysia. Based on the review, this paper emphasises the need to address STEM graduates’ lack of 21st- century skills, such as communication and critical thinking. Aside from that, incorporating English for Specific Purposes (ESP) into the secondary education curriculum could enhance English proficiency tailored to STEM contexts. By implementing an interdisciplinary approach combining both STEM and English language with technology integration, STEM graduates in Malaysia could be more prepared and equipped with global knowledge and 21st-century skills.
