As the field of engineering education began to mature in the 1980s and 1990s, many of the early researchers in engineering education were faculty in disciplinary areas of engineering such as chemical, mechanical, and industrial. Because they were not trained in many of the tools of the social sciences, they found themselves in need of people with expertise in education, statistics, psychology, and sociology to bring the rigor of those disciplines to the topics they were studying. As they began to reach out to the disciplinary experts, they often found themselves turning to women. In turn, those women who were established in their fields found themselves learning how to best communicate with engineering faculty and gain recognition and respect. This chapter describes several early collaborations between engineers and women in complementary disciplines, highlights how the collaborations influenced the developing field of engineering education research, and explores the benefits and challenges facing the women collaborators.
