Models and Methods: (Re)Framing World Englishes
摘要
World Englishes is a field that challenges the notion of a monolithic English. This chapter first reviews pluralistic models of World Englishes which account for the diversity and evolution of English around the world. It then builds towards a new framework, acknowledging how diverse English narratives emerge around the world and how English users—from places like the USA, Nigeria and China—make sense of these diverse narratives in their daily lives. Ultimately, speakers share a broad idea of “English”, but the exact meaning of “speaking English” only takes form in local contexts.
