Climate Change and Coastal Hazards in Delta Ecosystems

Sea level rise and the escalation of catastrophic events brought on by climate change are two significant issues delta ecosystems must immediately face. Communities along the coast could suffer serious harm due to coastal hazards. However, several other climate-related risks also present immediate dangers. By addressing different deltas worldwide, this chapter investigates the effects of climate change on delta ecosystems. According to recent studies, rising greenhouse gas concentrations are bringing about conditions in delta systems that have not been observed in millions of years. This could lead to significant and permanent ecological changes. Due to anthropogenic climate change, delta production has decreased, food web dynamics have altered, habitat-forming species are less prevalent, species ranges have shifted, and disease prevalence has increased. We give a general overview of how human activity and global warming interact along the shore. This chapter aims to illustrate the importance of long-term monitoring, the development of ecological indicators, and the applications of knowledge on the response of aquatic ecosystem functioning and biodiversity to global warming. The findings can be applied to other regions. By including the perspectives of different deltas from around the world, this chapter gives fresh ideas and a distinctive viewpoint on the intricate nature of climate change’s effects on delta ecosystems.
