The sustainable future of delta regions is threatened by new global problems such as water depletion, pollutants, intense aquaculture, and climate change. A multifaceted approach to preserving and utilizing delta ecosystems is required to address these issues. In order to maintain the balance between the three dimensions and achieve a sustainable future, the holistic approach must consider not only the economic and social development but also the adverse effects of this growth on the environment. Therefore, through a critical study of their contribution to each of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their subsets, this chapter offers a thorough viewpoint on the possible difficulties for the sustainable development of delta ecosystems. Delta ecosystems are important freshwater resources at the moment. In human cultures, they are essential for producing food, drinking water, energy, recreation, wastewater treatment, and preventing floods and droughts. Many lakes and reservoirs have suffered significant degradation due to recent intense exploitation. While eutrophication remains the primary problem for many deltas globally, habitat loss has gained significant attention recently. The sustainability of deltas can become a global issue in addition to the ongoing concerns posed by human activities like aquaculture. Regarding the SDGs, there are favorable connections between the environmental SDGs and the measures taken to achieve the sustainability of deltas. Decision-makers keep an eye on and evaluate the sustainable development of deltas based on these connections.
