Rethinking Authenticity in Architecture: The Ethical Implications of AI-Generated Design

The intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and architecture is reshaping professional practice, sparking ethical debates concerning authenticity, authorship, and creativity. While past discussions on architectural ethics have focused on social responsibility, environmental sustainability, and professional integrity, contemporary discourse increasingly engages with the implications of AI-generated design. Historically, similar debates surrounded the adoption of computer-aided design (CAD) in the late 20th century, as concerns emerged over the displacement of traditional architectural methods. Today, AI has evolved beyond visualisation tools to influence generative design, sustainability optimisation, automation, and even decision-making in architectural processes. A key issue in this transformation is the challenge AI poses to architectural authenticity. Traditionally, authenticity has been linked to originality, cultural context, and material integrity. However, with AI-driven design solutions, the human role in the creative process risks becoming secondary, leading to concerns over the homogenisation of architectural styles and the potential loss of cultural specificity. Additionally, the rise of AI-generated designs complicates questions of authorship, as ownership of AI-assisted works remains legally and ethically ambiguous. This article argues that rather than rejecting AI outright, architectural practice must adapt by redefining authenticity within a contemporary framework. Instead of allowing AI to dictate design, architects should harness AI tools as extensions of human creativity, ensuring that technological advancements enhance rather than replace the human-driven design process. By doing so, architecture can integrate AI responsibly while preserving the essential role of human intuition, cultural understanding, and ethical integrity in the built environment.
