In the summer of 2024, I performed the role of Tedra in Fat Ham with the Common Thread Theatre Collective in Davidson, NC, an experience that was both artistically transformative and personally resonant. This chapter reflects on my approach to embodying Tedra, emphasizing the dramaturgical and analytical practices that shaped my performance. Drawing comparisons between Tedra in Fat Ham and Gertrude from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, I examine the intersections of gender norms, patriarchal expectations, and cultural specificity that influence their journeys. This role also provided a lens to examine the evolving dynamics of gender and power, particularly the ways Tedra navigates relationships with her son Juicy, her late husband Pap, and her partner Rev. Tedra’s journey is one of vibrant survival, emotional depth, and an unwavering commitment to her son’s future. Through this role, I explored the tension between love, sacrifice, and systemic oppression, delving into how personal identity persists within oppressive structures.
