Biosecurity plays an important role in the transformation process that livestock farming is currently undergoing. It not only reduces the risk of introducing pathogens into animal holdings but can also help improve animal welfare by protecting animals from infectious diseases that can lead to pain, suffering, and death. Moreover, biosecurity is an essential component for sustainable and profitable livestock farming. It is important to note that it has recently been clarified, in the European Union, that the prime responsibility for biosecurity lies in the hands of the operator, i.e., the farmer (Regulation (EU) 2016/429).
