Stormwater management systems use strategies to reduce stormwater flow or runoff, which affects agriculture, society and everyday life. The Ahar and Pyne system is known to be a long-standing, indigenous, and successful flood management and water conservation technique in south Bihar in eastern India, using channels and retention ponds. This traditional system was specifically designed to manage water in South Bihar also, established in response to the region’s distinct agro-climatic circumstances. During the British era, this age-old system was ignored, ruining the system and leaving it in poor shape. This research investigates how the “Ahar and Pyne” as a stormwater management system can potentially support sustainable development, fostering urban resilience through case study of Bihta a suburban town of Patna. The current conditions of Ahar and Pyne drainage system is the basis of initial examination, with system enhancement envisioned in future. In order to depict the existing scenario, the drainage system of the Bihta has been mapped using GIS then its existing scenario has been compared to the Ahar and Pyne system, which is the historic drainage system to support agriculture of Bihar. A thorough documentation of the system has been provided through first hand observations completed on-site. The results provide an overview of the present condition of the drainage system and a path forward for the region’s sustainable urban development planning with urban resilience. This concept has potential to mitigate floods and water logging, provide cost-effective irrigation in in the hinterland of urban areas, recharge ground water, manage droughts apart from rejuvenation of flora and fauna. The findings highlight the benefits and potential applicability of this traditional method, integrating it into modern blue-green infrastructure systems.
