In the past two decades, the rise in temperatures attributed to climate change has resulted in a 70% increase in extreme weather events, notably intense heat waves. These events pose significant risks to human health, exacerbating heat-related illnesses and vulnerabilities within affected communities while compounding urban challenges by increasing energy demands and straining infrastructure. The temperature increase in Indian cities has increased the population’s vulnerability, leaving people exposed to extreme environmental conditions while travelling. Studies have shown that rising temperatures will significantly change travel patterns and preferred destinations, imposing infrastructural challenges and health risks. This paper aims to assess the acceptance and relevance of various adaptive and mitigative strategies at individual, community, and governmental levels to address vulnerabilities while commuting in extreme hot weather conditions. Input was collected from 13 stakeholders representing the government, community, and individuals during a workshop on “Gendered approaches for addressing adaptation capacity to hot weather” organised on 5th August 2023 in Delhi. Using exploratory data analysis, the consensus and conflicts for selected strategies are defined. The findings of the study indicate diverse stakeholder responses, highlighting the need to secure broad support and a comprehensive understanding of consensus and conflict, which can inform effective policymaking and enable governments to implement targeted strategies to address the vulnerabilities of commuters in hot weather conditions.
