Green Hydrogen Production Potential from Agricultural Biomass in Togo’s Coastal Region

The objective of this study was to assess the possibility of generating green hydrogen from leftover maize and rice. Information regarding the cultivation and land size of these crops was collected from the National Institute of Statistics and Economic and Demographic Studies (INSEED) in Togo, utilizing the latest data from the year 2021. Aspen Plus software was used to simulate the production process. The study showed that the best conditions for producing green hydrogen differ depending on whether rice or maize residues are used. The best temperature for rice residues is 600 ℃ with an SBR of 2, while for maize residues, it is 650 ℃ with the same SBR of 2. Yoto and Zio prefectures were found to hold the greatest potential for producing green hydrogen. The coastal region of Togo has a green hydrogen potential of 31.35 Gt equivalent to 1235.37 Gwh, which is much higher than the region’s current energy needs. The results of this research indicate that green hydrogen may be a feasible choice for Togo’s shift to sustainable energy and the promotion of circularity in the country. Our results suggest that maximizing hydrogen yield from agricultural waste would require identifying the ideal conditions for each crop type during the gasifying process. Hydrogen from agriculture waste may be sufficient to cover the energy needs for the region. Introducing green hydrogen production could help the nation fulfill its obligations to the Paris Agreement and the NetZero initiative.
