A basic study of insect diversity and biology provides the foundation on which conservation needs can be appraised and actions formulated. However, the widespread perception that simply gaining and communicating that knowledge is conservation, rather than a precursor (sometimes very tangential) to more focused activity, can distract from this primary purpose and, in some cases, divert resources from actual conservation.
