Nearly half a century ago, a group of pioneering scientists embarked on a journey to understand how certain young individuals thrived in life despite facing numerous risks. These pioneers—including Norman Garmezy, Lois Murphy, Michael Rutter, and Emmy Werner (Gewirtz & Zamir, 2014)—recognized the immense potential in understanding the processes that lead to resilience. They encouraged their students and colleagues to focus their research on children and youth who defied expectations, achieved positive outcomes, overcame catastrophic experiences, and developed into healthier young adults than anyone could have predicted, given their adverse or risky backgrounds. The ultimate goal of this work was practical: to inform efforts aimed at fostering positive development in at-risk youth, particularly those facing severe psychosocial challenges or multiple risks.
