SNOMED CT® is the product of many years of evolution and collaboration from around the globe. It was first released in 2002 resulting from a partnership between the College of American Pathologists (CAP) in the United States of America (USA) and the National Health Service (NHS®) in the United Kingdom (UK). Since then, clinicians, health informaticians, terminologists, and technologists from dozens of countries have contributed to SNOMED CT’s® content, design, and tooling. Today, SNOMED CT® is owned, maintained, and distributed by the not-for-profit organisation known as SNOMED International, on behalf of its Members. Through this shared ownership structure, the global community continues to contribute to the ongoing evolution and development of SNOMED CT®. This chapter explores SNOMED CT’s® history, its evolution, and its many contributors who have helped it to become the world class clinical terminology that it is today.
