Once a new version of a SNOMED CT® edition has been developed, it must be published and distributed for use. This includes all concepts, descriptions, axioms, inferred relationships, and reference sets (including language, content, map, and metadata reference sets) in any module within the relevant SNOMED CT® edition. The release process should be carefully planned before the content is developed. After authoring, the content is classified and validated, packaged, re-validated, and then distributed—either as a set of compressed release files, or via a syndication service or terminology services. Feedback and maintenance are another important part of any release process. Release teams must have appropriate skills, training, and tooling to perform all release activities in a safe and reliable way. This chapter explores all these different aspects of release and distribution management.
