SNOMED CT® contains a rich web of relationships that form its polyhierarchical structure and the computable definition of each concept’s meaning. To ensure that these relationships can be authored, reasoned over, and queried in a consistent way, specific rules are defined to control their use. The set of rules that specify the permitted attributes and values that may be used to define a given set of concepts is known as the SNOMED CT® concept model. The machine readable concept model (MRCM) is a computable representation of the SNOMED CT® concept model, which allows software tools to use the rules to assist their users in authoring and querying SNOMED CT® content. This chapter explores the structure and purpose of SNOMED CT’s® concept model and the associated MRCM.
