Unintentional Neglect
摘要
The care of older adults can become quite complex, necessitating the need for assistance from caregivers. Both informal, family members who are unpaid or without training, and professional caregivers, may unintentionally neglect the olders adults in their care due to a variety of factors, including fatigue and burnout. Healthcare providers must be alert to the quality of care that their patients are receiving, the relationship between the carer and care recipient, and offer support and education. Caregivers who are receptive to, and implement recommendations often have the best intentions. However, the absence of improved care despite support may signal intentional neglect and a need for change in caregivers. The healthcare providers’ priority is always advocacy for their patients.
