XR offers new opportunities for paleontology education based on the 3D digitization of scientific collections. Challenges include the 3D scanning of collection specimens, where 3D models must be sufficiently detailed yet compact enough for interactive environments, and designing engaging XR experiences. This paper discusses several 3D scanning technologies as well as three interactive 3D applications we developed for paleontology education. One application is web-based, while two applications were made for XR-HMDs. The main focus is on an immersive XR application implemented with the open-source game engine Godot. The application can be easily reconfigured by non-XR experts, allowing teachers to customize the digital content for different lessons. While our focus is on paleontology education, the concepts, digitization processes, and the software are transferable to other scientific fields for XR learning and therefore of interest to a wide audience.

摘要
