Dementia is a leading cause of disability and dependency among older adults worldwide, with prevalence rates currently estimated at 57.4 million cases and projected to triple by 2050. Despite ongoing research, there is currently no pharmacological treatment capable of altering the course of the disease, leading to growing interest in complementary non-pharmacological interventions, in particular reminiscence therapy. With the increasing use of information and communication technologies in healthcare, virtual reminiscence interventions have emerged as an approach with the potential to surpass the benefits of traditional methods and media by facilitating the delivery of personalised autobiographical experiences that are both immersive and interactable. This article presents the preliminary clinical validation of the Virtual Reminiscence Model, delivered through ANNA (AmbieNte virtual Narrativo Autobiográfico), a virtual reality application that serves as a metaphor for the brain to stimulate reminiscence and promote storytelling. A pilot intervention was conducted with two participants with dementia, who interacted with ANNA using two modalities: a photograph album and 360º videos. The virtual reality application was positively received by participants and without significant adverse effects reported. Minimal cybersickness was observed, mainly associated with the 360º videos. The effects of the intervention revealed that it could sustain or improve communication indicators, increase psychological well-being, and alleviate behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia. These preliminary findings support the potential benefits of the Virtual Reminiscence Model, designed as a human-centred approach for creating autobiographical narrative virtual environments that serve as catalysts for storytelling.

摘要
