Short Bowel Syndrome and Intestinal Failure
摘要
This chapter will discuss the definition and etiologies of pediatric intestinal failure. An important consideration in this population is the anatomy of the gastrointestinal tract which includes what part and how much of the bowel is missing or not functioning properly. Knowledge of this will help suppress nutrient deficiencies due to malabsorption. Parenteral and enteral nutrition for both pediatric intestinal failure and small bowel transplant are reviewed. Assessing anthropometrics and micronutrient status is necessary for growth status. Pharmacologic and surgical therapies are reviewed which can improve patient symptoms and quality of life. Complications of pediatric intestinal failure along with treatment options are reviewed.
