Congenital Heart Disease: Nutritional Considerations
摘要
Congenital heart disease is a common cause of infant mortality in the newborn period. Patients with congenital heart disease often require intervention in the postnatal period and some require multiple interventions in the first few years of life. Congenital heart disease is a known cause of feeding difficulties and malnutrition. Optimal management of nutritional status is crucial to improve the short- and long-term outcomes of these patients, both pre- and post-operatively. Standardized feeding regimens including enteral and parenteral feeding protocols, assessment for feed intolerance and caloric supplementation as well as continuous monitoring are vital toward ensuring maximal growth in this high-risk cohort of children.
