Vitamin A
摘要
Vitamin A is a fat-soluble micronutrient that regulates multiple cellular processes. Most notably, it plays critical roles in vision, immune system regulation, and growth and development. Vitamin A deficiency is common in many developing nations, especially in Africa and Asia. This condition may lead to significant impairment in quality of life especially in the pediatric population. Amongst other effects, vitamin A deficiency is well-known to cause ophthalmic and dermatologic abnormalities such as night blindness. Vitamin A is obtained from the diet and exists mainly as retinyl esters and carotenoids. As many conditions that cause malabsorption and cholestasis may lead to secondary vitamin A deficiency, routine monitoring of vitamin A levels is important in patients where those disorders are present.
