Ethnographic writing can evoke place as atmosphere, presence, and analytical ground. Drawing on examples from classical, multi-sited, digital, and more-than-human ethnographies, we show how place emerges through detail, absence, and atmosphere. Whether conjured through concrete detail, bodily sensation, or affective tension, place should never be reduced to a mere backdrop. It takes form in the reader’s imagination through the ethnographer’s attention and the movement of the text. At its best, descriptions of place anchors and invites the reader to dwell within the text.
