Stamps are Planar, Carbon is Not: A Philatelic History of Stereochemistry
摘要
Stereochemistry, the branch of chemistry that deals with the three-dimensional arrangement of atoms in space, and how such layout affects chemical reactivity, is of critical importance in biological systems and the pharmaceutical industry. This chapter involves the use of postage stampsPostage stamps to illustrate some milestones in the history of stereochemistry, including the pioneering work of Louis PasteurPasteur, Louis, the seminal contributions of van’t Hoff and Le Bel, and the contributions of several other key players in the field of stereochemistry in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
