The thought of Pasolini, one of the most important Italian intellectuals of the twentieth century and resumed in this contribution, critically reflects Italy’s post-war urban development, highlighting the stark contrast between the fragile historical beauty of its cities and the homogenisation driven by capitalist modernisation. Through comparing Orte and Sabaudia, Pasolini exposes the cultural loss and erasure of collective memory brought about by functional yet dehumanising architecture. His perspective is not one of mere nostalgia. Still, a profoundly political stance: the defence of historical stratification and the “anonymous past” becomes a form of resistance against the ideological flattening of the present.
