This chapter presents a close reading of Will Alexander’s The Combustion Cycle (2021), showing how it exemplifies a shamanic or trance poetics. It argues that Alexander’s poetry is essentially concerned with the possibility that magic and occult processes might liberate us from various forms of spiritual or political oppression, in particular forms of racist and colonial oppression, including their related forms of ecological devastation. It shows that Alexander’s work, influenced by the magical origins of surrealism and animistic African cosmologies, strives to unify disparate spheres of thought, to heal and redeem the world, through the sonic occultations of poetic speech.
