Reinaldo ArenasArenas, Reinaldo’s demolition of Villaverde’s 1882 novel is shown to be an example of deliberately unfaithful book-to-book adaptation. Arenas epitomizes Robert Stam’s concepts of transtextual subversion, visceral-ideological contempt, and sarcastic fidelity with regard to remade properties. Anti-classicism as a frequent motivating factor in distortions of revered original texts, with methods including iconoclastic distortion; lampooning of sacred myths and hallowed idealisms; ad hominem attacks on famous authors (e.g., Arenas’s malevolent insertion of Villaverde into the narrative).
