Analysis of the Seasonal Succession of Phytoplankton Assemblages with Environmental Parameters: The Case of the Oualidia Lagoon

According to Margalef’s model of phytoplankton community succession, algal communities follow a specific seasonal dynamic, influenced by ecological factors such as variations in temperature, salinity, and nutrients. In this study, we carried out a quantitative and qualitative analysis of phytoplankton species during 2014–2015, using seawater samples taken weekly from the Oualidia lagoon. The aim was to study the variation in phytoplankton assemblages as a function of physico-chemical parameters, according to the Margalef’smodel. Phytoplankton communities are dominated by diatoms in winter/spring and by dinoflagellates in summer/autumn. Diatoms are mainly represented by the genera: Nitzshia, Pseudonitzshia, Navicula, Chaetoceros and Thalssiosira, and dinoflagellates by the genera: Prorocentrum, Protoperidinium quinquecorne, scripsiella, Gonyaulax and Ceratium. Overall, this dynamic is conditioned by nutrient availability (nitrite, nitrate and orthophosphate), light conditions and seasonal variations in temperature and turbulence.
