Cowries and The Message: News Consumption, Digitization and Political Economy of Media Convergence in the Day-to-Day Nigerian Life
摘要
The disruption of media markets and the ensuing diffusion of the news media ecosystem triggered by digital platforms and the whole gamut of digitization has reordered the economic conditions upon which the media is shaped and reshaped. The thriving experience is significant to low-information societies and hyper-news information environments where news consumers weigh which platforms to derive news. This is reminiscent of old African traditional market system of cowries – that involves the giver and receiver of the message. However, the new media ecosystem as various platforms coalesced both on mainstream and the digital spaces. The new reality is also evident amid the convergence of mainstream media and digital/online news outlets. In Nigeria, the media system dates back more than a century and has witnessed a dimensional reordering of the markets. To that effect, how has mainstream media navigated the advent of digital media platforms as an instrument of control in the news media market? Concurrently, how has digital news influenced the dynamic change in the mainstream media? This study explores the conditions upon which the old and new media agencies have tilted the market, given the commodification of audiences in mainstream and digital media spaces in Africa’s biggest economy.
