A proverb (Anzaakan in Tiv; Atutu-Inu in Ukwuani; and Ilu in Igbo) is a tool used in public speaking and a recognised channel of communication amongst Africans. It is a short statement of wisdom or advice that has been passed from generation to generation. In most cases, proverbs are brief sentences derived from true events and contain idiomatic expressions. They are witty sayings said in verse, prose or song and are meant to deliver strong messages. They are tied to culture and exist in many cultures and have intricate meanings, which can only be decoded by people who are well versed in the culture and language with which it is spoken. In order to be able to decode the meanings which are embedded in proverbs, one must have a thorough knowledge of the culture and language with which it is spoken (Ogwezzy, 2008/2013).
