This chapter reflects on the importance of strengthening value transmission systems in society, and on protecting value systems against vices and corrupt influences. Parents and families, schools, community-based organizations and the state are identified as the most important vehicles of value transmission in society. Recommendations are made for ways in which the functioning of these mechanisms in South African society can be improved, while the importance of creating ethical climates in organizations and social institutions are also discussed. Protecting values is as important as transmitting values. Value protection requires mechanisms of accountability and the resolution of possible violent conflicts through discourse. The chapter analyses the reasons for the implosion of accountability mechanisms during the state capture period and makes proposals for strengthening accountability mechanisms through direct and indirect strategies. Subsequently, attention is given to the main principles that must undergird civil discourse. The salience of Habermas’ discourse ethics for civil discourse is discussed and possible barriers to solution-driven civil discourse in South Africa is identified.
