Chapter 5 identifies distorted motivational dispositions as a third key driver of immoral conduct. Motivations are intricately related to needs. Needs give rise to motivations, and motivations energise and direct behaviour toward need satisfaction. Some motivations are episodic and fleeting in nature while others are relatively stable and enduring drives in the human personality that directs a person’s goals over a significant timespan. I refer to the latter as motivational dispositions. While some motivational dispositions such as the drive to attachment are essential for human wellbeing, others might be self-destructive and socially harmful. Avoidance motivation, hate motivation, greed motivation and power motivation are particularly destructive drives clearly visible in South African society. They flow from problematic thinking patterns, need obsessions, flawed socialization processes and negative situational and environmental stimuli. Chapter 5 discusses the main features of each of these motivational dispositions and the impact they could have on the self and society.
