Increased cancer survivorship can be partially explained by the development of efficacious nontargeted and targeted anticancer agents. However, anticancer therapies are also associated with cardiovascular complications, ranging from acute arrhythmias and hypertension to cardiomyopathy and heart failure, resulting in a significant increase in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The field of cardio-oncology was developed to drive a multidisciplinary approach to cancer care and treatment, as well as the investigation of cardiotoxicity as a distinct cardiovascular syndrome. Since its inception, the development of collaborative care models, advancements in imaging, and cardioprotective agents have improved risk stratification and management of anticancer therapy-induced cardiotoxicity. Additionally, equity-focused research and long-term surveillance are necessary to address gaps in cardio-oncology care. In this chapter, we provide an expert review of the significant strides and existing gaps within cardio-oncology and the future of the field. With the increasing prevalence of anticancer therapy-induced cardiotoxicity, the urgent need for interdisciplinary collaboration to advance care has become apparent. This chapter provides a current guide, for research and clinical practice, toward shaping the subspecialty’s evolution and improving cancer patient care.
