At the time of writing, criminological engagement with the intersection of climate change and policing remains limited. When attention is given, it predominantly focuses on the dynamics between law enforcement and climate protesters. This book chapter examines how the increasing diversity of protest participants, the evolution of protest tactics, and the rise of both climate activism and anti-environmental policy protests (commonly referred to as ‘greenlash’) expose critical vulnerabilities within policing institutions. These developments influence public trust and perceptions of police legitimacy, while also generating internal tensions among officers. The policing of civil disobedience plays a pivotal role in the climatisation of police work; it can deepen polarisation by prompting officers either to align with climate-oriented values or, conversely, to adopt anti-environmental attitudes.
