This book aims to explore the various processes, practices, and events through which the accelerating effects of climate change are transforming, and will continue to transform, police institutions and policing practices worldwide. Substantial work on many related and connected matters has already been undertaken across various areas of green criminology, critical criminology, security governance, and policing studies. This book builds on that foundation by engaging with insights from a diverse group of 23 experts, whose extensive experience and international perspectives bring much-needed nuance to the debate. The way forward lies in synthesising knowledge and expertise traditionally confined to separate disciplines. Only an interdisciplinary perspective can provide a robust knowledge base and enhance the preparedness of police services to respond effectively to climate crises. The contribution of this book is its effort to connect the dots between various strands of knowledge and offer a roadmap addressing two key questions: how climate change impacts police work (Chaps. 3 – 6 ), and how it reshapes police organisations and their responses to evolving crime and harm landscapes (Chaps. 6 – 9 ). Importantly, these two questions are not independent; their trajectories influence each other in meaningful ways. This interconnectedness underscores the necessity of addressing both aspects in tandem for a comprehensive understanding of climate change’s implications for police work.
