Bacterial infections of the skin are important and common maladies of humankind. Bacterial dermatological infections occur in people of all ages, and they are found in people who reside in every region of the world. Only a few such conditions are discussed in this chapter. Two of them occur much more commonly than the third one—they are erythrasma and furuncles. The third one is not so common and is associated with poverty and individuals who reside where there are poor health systems; this condition is Hansen’s disease (leprosy). While the first two are superficial infections of the skin and are easily treated with short treatment courses, Hansen’s disease is different, and many physicians whose practice setting is in the developed countries will not have patients with this chronic condition. This does not mean that they should not know the basics about leprosy. This chapter contains these topics for the benefit of general practitioners whether they encounter these conditions or not.
